Arsenal have been dealt a major blow after Martin Odegaard tested positive for Covid-19, meaning he will miss Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham.
The news about the midfielder’s positive test was revealed on Thursday night after he was left out of the squad to face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.
It had been hoped Odegaard could be back to face Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday after it was announced that the self-isolation period for people who test positive for Covid-19 is being cut to five full days in England.
That guidance, however, is not coming into force until Monday, meaning Odegaard must isolate for seven days and he will miss Sunday’s game with Spurs.
The news is a blow to Arsenal, who are already short on numbers due to injuries and the Africa Cup of Nations, particularly in midfield, with Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey both away on international duty.
Emile Smith Rowe is struggling with a groin issue and Takehiro Tomiyasu has a calf problem, with both men also absent at Anfield..
