Luiz Suarez Shades Tears Despite Qualifying For Champs. League Knockout Stages With Atletico

Luis Suarez broke down in tears after being forced out of Atletico Madrid's Champions League win over Porto with an injury.

The 34-year-old striker was spotted sobbing on the Atletico substitutes bench after muscle pain forced him out of the crucial group stage game.

The former Liverpool man signalled to the bench early on that he was unable to continue and was replaced by Matheus Cunha. Atletico said Suarez will undergo further tests in Madrid.

Suarez at least had a front row seat for a barnstorming and bad-tempered game which saw Atletico win 3-1 to secure second spot in Group B behind Liverpool and reach the knockout stages.

In the end, Suarez's old club helped Atletico's cause by beating AC Milan 2-1 to dump the Italian club out of Europe altogether.

A dramatic second-half at the Estadio Dragao saw Antoine Griezmann put Atletico into a 56th-minute lead.

The game then exploded into life with referee Clement Turpin flashing three red cards in the space of eight minutes.

Atletico's Yannick Carrasco went first for raising his hands to Otavio as tempers flared following a foul.

However, Porto's numerical advantage lasted for only a few minutes as Wendell was dismissed for appearing to lightly catch Cunha with his elbow close to the touchline. This sparked a melee involving players and coaching staff.

Porto keeper Agustin Marchesin, who wasn't even on the pitch, was also shown a red card for angrily protesting Wendell's red.

Atletico duly wrapped up victory late on thanks to goals from Angel Correa and Rodrigo de Paul before a late Porto consolation through Sergio Oliveira.

Losing Suarez for any length of time would come as a major blow for Diego Simeone. The Uruguayan scored 21 goals in 32 La Liga appearances last season as they won the title.

And he has seven goals in 12 league games so far this season - plus another in the Champions League.

Atletico may have made it through in Europe but their title defence in Spain is ailing with a 10-point gap already between themselves in fourth place and leaders Real Madrid.
