Euro 2020: Fear Grips Denmark Players As Christian Eriksen Collapsed In Clash Against Finland

Christian Eriksen was conscious and in a stable condition as he was stretchered off the pitch after collapsing in a Euro 2020 clash between Denmark and Finland.

Eriksen, the former Tottenham Hotspur star who plays for Inter Milan, collapsed as a throw-in was taken towards him with no one near him.

Worried Denmark players and fans were in tears as their talisman was treated on the pitch.

As he was carried off, he was conscious and he will now receive further medical treatment.

A statement from Uefa read as cited by Sports Central: ‘Following the medical emergency involving Denmark’s player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials and further information will be communicated at 19:45 CET. The player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilised.

The Danish federation also confirmed Eriksen was conscious: ”Christian Eriksen is awake and is for further examinations at Rigshospitalet.

In distressing scenes just before half-time, Eriksen fell to the floor leaving players and fans gravely concerned as medical staff attempted to resuscitate him.

In the BBC studio, Gary Lineker said: ‘It’s one of the most distressing scenes I think I’ve ever seen at a football match. Christian Eriksen falling to the ground, his team-mates surrounding him.

I’m clearly distraught and both his team-mates and the Finland team. Football truly put into perspective. I think the only thing I can remember remotely like that is Fabrice Muamba, he pulled through.Lets hope for his sake that Christian pulls through as well. So distressing.’

Former Arsenal and Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas added: ‘I don’t even know what to say really. My body is shaking. ‘All I can think is about Christian’s family, what they must be going through. It’s a very, very sad moment we’re going through and I pray for the very best.

Alex Scott, the former Arsenal player, continued: ‘I’m getting emotional because I can’t believe it. ‘Everyone at home, what we’re witnessing and like you said Gary, I think football totally goes out the window. You’re thinking about his family, all the rest of the players out there witnessing it as well..‘I just got on my phone and messaged my mum telling her I love her. And I think it’s a reminder of how quickly life can change just like that.
