Chelsea's Carney Chukwuemeka Is Set To Lead England Under-21 At The World Cup

England Under-20 boss Ian Foster has named his squad for the upcoming World Cup in Argentina  - with Chelsea winger Carney Chukwuemeka leading the names bidding to dazzle this summer.

That victorious tournament six years ago saw the birth of a crop of stars who have made it as first team regulars today - including Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Fikayo Tomori, Kyle Walker-Peters, Dominic Solanke and Ademola Lookman - so those heading to South America will know the opportunity they have.

Other notable names in the squad include Tottenham midfielder Alfie Devine, Southampton midfielder Sam Edozie and Man City striker Liam Delap.

Meanwhile, highly-rated Leeds United starlet Darko Gyabi - who is yet to make his debut for England Under-20s - has also been selected.

Foster had been facing increasing uncertainty over which players would be available as he awaited approval from clubs to take players to the tournament - which kicks off on May 20.

Three players picked by Foster may be needed for play-off finals dependent on semi-final results while others have been used by their clubs in the Premier League which also has runs beyond England's opening game with Tunisia on May 22.

Manchester United have already told hosts Argentina they couldn't call up Alejandro Garnacho.

Coventry City pair Callum Doyle and Brooke Norton-Cuffy, on loan from Manchester City and Arsenal respectively, are hoping to win promotion into the Premier League, and Middlesbrough also hope their Aston Villa loanee Aaron Ramsey will recover from injury to take part in the play-offs.

Peterborough defender Ronnie Edwards is also due to face Sheffield Wednesday in the League One semi-final.

Bolton's Luke Mbete is injured and misses out on the squad after returning to his parent club Manchester City.

Foster - who has been in the role since last summer having worked with the Three Lions' U17, U18 and U19 side previously - will be looking to emulate Paul Simpson, who masterminded England's triumph in 2017.

That was the same year Foster started working in the England youth set up, initially as a National Specialist Coach with the U17s - working closely with the age group's former boss Steve Cooper.

Prior to his time with England, Foster managed Galway United and Dundalk in Ireland.

His success last summer with the Under-19s will give the FA confidence that England could fare well again this year with the Under-20s. Three players in his current group - Chukwuemeka, Ramsey and Doyle - were all on the scoresheet during their 3-1 win against Israel to clinch the trophy.
