Barcelona Have Reportedly Won Their Legal Struggle With LaLiga Over Gavi's Deal

Barcelona 'can register Gavi as a first-team player after a judge ruled in their favour and against LaLiga'.

The 18-year-old Spain midfielder is enjoying an impressive campaign for Barcelona and also represented his country at the World Cup.

He signed a bumper four-year contract back in September which included a €1billion release clause but Barcelona were unable to register the new deal because of LaLiga's salary limits.

While Gavi was still able to play for the team, it precluded him from being a fully-fledged first-team player and wasn't able to take the No 6 shirt - as previously worn by club legend and coach Xavi - as planned.

However, according to La Vanguardia, Barcelona's legal action against LaLiga's decision has been successful, with a judge at the city's commercial court obliging the league to register Gavi's contract.

Barcelona went to court at 1pm last Friday to try and find a legal loophole. The judge's verdict will be applied from midnight on Tuesday, though LaLiga has the right to appeal.

The Nou Camp club also failed in their attempts to register the new contract of Ronald Araujo amid their ongoing financial strife.

Despite reducing their wage bill by around £105million since Joan Laporta returned as club president, achieved in part by the departures of Lionel Messi in 2021 and Gerard Pique last year, the total still stood at £571m when it needed to be £395m.

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has insisted the restrictions are for Barcelona's own good, arguing their expected deficit of £175m next season contravenes Financial Fair Play rules.

Tebas said as cited by Sports Central: 'The issue of not registering Gavi comes as a consequence of the fact that it is a registration that takes effect next season and has no effect in the coming six months. 'A registration can be denied because next season Barcelona's expected deficit is more than 200 million euros as if today. 'So it does not seem appropriate to accept that registration.'

Despite Barcelona pulling the 'economic levers' last summer to ease their financial situation amid debts of over £1billion, they have been hit by an early exit from the Champions League.

The club budgeted for a minimum quarter-final finish in Europe's top competition and their failure to get out the ground means a shortfall of £18m on the balance sheet.

Winning the Europa League would generate £13m but they must first get past Manchester United in the play-off round.

The club say no more than five per cent of future earnings were mortgaged off last summer when they sold part of their future television revenue and almost half of Barca Studios.

They currently enjoy a five-point advantage at the top of the LaLiga table after closest rivals Real Madrid were held to a goalless draw by Real Sociedad at the weekend.

And the latest development on Gavi offers further comfort.
