Chelsea Reportedly Failed In Their Attempt To Hijack Spurs Bid For Richarlison

Tottenham held off a late attempt from Chelsea to sign Everton forward Richarlison.

Everton had rejected an initial £40m from Spurs at 4pm on Wednesday but they came back with a revised offer of £50m plus add-ons which Chelsea opted not to match.

Richarlison underwent his medical in Brazil on Thursday with Tottenham staff present and is due back in the UK next week. Watford will receive around £2m from the deal.

Tottenham are also in advanced in talks over a £15m deal for Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence and have a loan in place for Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet.

Richarlison will become Antonio Conte's fourth summer signing in an impressive window after already landing Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster and Yves Bissouma.

Spurs are expected to commit to an initial package in the region of £50million, with a further £10m in add-ons bringing the total outlay for the Brazilian to around £60m.

Everton and Spurs had been locked in talks in recent days before they eventually reached an agreement.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy met with good friend and Everton counterpart Bill Kenwright for dinner at Scott's in London on Monday evening.

Various Tottenham players have been mentioned as potential makeweights though winger Steven Bergwijn, who was considered by Everton earlier in the window, has expressed a preference to join Ajax or another Champions League side.

Proposals involving Harry Winks have also been dismissed.

Conte is looking to add to his squad quickly and prepare his team well in advance of the transfer window closing.

The signing of Richarlison would boost Conte's options with the Brazilian international able to operate out wide or up front comfortably.

He would be able to provide competition in attacking areas as well as deputy for Harry Kane, limiting pressure on Son Heung-min.

Everton are willing to listen to offers for the 25-year old because, despite avoiding relegation last season, their financial situation is still precarious.

They can raise capital through player sales and will look to give manager Frank Lampard as much money as possible to rebuild a competitive side.

In total, Richarlison has made 152 appearances for Everton since joining from Watford in 2018 for £40m, scoring 53 goals.

Chelsea are in talks to sign Raphinha from Leeds after opting not to up their bid for Richarlison.
