Boxing: Conor McGregor Admits That He Wants To Return To The Boxing Ring Before He Retires

Conor McGregor says that he wants to box again but insists that his main focus for now is a return to UFC.

The Irishman has not stepped foot in the octagon since July 2021, when he sustained a horror leg break against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.

His only previous professional boxing bout came against Floyd Mayweather in 2017, when he lost via a technical knockout in the 10th round.

McGregor told Sky Sports while attending the Monaco Grand Prix as cited by Sports Central: 'Boxing is my first love in combat sports. 'I had such a great time the last time I was out there. 'Obviously, my return will be in the octagon for UFC - that story is far from over, in fact it's just being written, it is just the beginning. But, boxing, for sure I will grace the squared circle again in the future.'

McGregor's return to UFC will be highly-anticipated as he has not fought for nearly a year since his devastating injury in his trilogy fight against Poirier.

With just seconds remaining in the first round, McGregor's leg crumpled underneath him and his coach John Kavanagh later revealed that the break occurred as the Irishman attempted a teep kick to Poirier's stomach.

The 33-year-old has lost three of his last four fights – two against Poirier and one against Khabib Nurmagomedov – so is understandably eager to get back in the cage.

McGregor said: 'The body is doing good. 'We are going to up the training bit by bit. I have another CT scan in the coming days and then I will be clear to kick. 'Once I can kick and grapple, I will be back in no time. Boxing training is going well, strength training. I am excited to get back.'
